  • Responsibilities

    Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Accounting is responsible for directing the capture and recording of all transactional financial accounting affairs of the organization. Responsibilities will include delegation, coordination, execution and review of all work related to the Agency’s transactions as well as maintaining fiscal records and preparing financial reports.

    Management Consulting

    • Communicating with other representatives of other departments regarding their accounting needs and/or accounting’s needs of them
    • Serving as the accounting representative on assigned committees
    • Building a culture of excellence and discipline that can be modeled by all levels of agency leadership
    • Ensuring credibility of the department by providing timely and accurate data, analyses and forecasts

    Process Management

    • Overseeing the preparation of financial reports and/or statements, including supporting schedules
    • Directing the daily, monthly and year-end processes related to the financial accounting transactions of the Agency
    • Practicing continual process improvement to evaluate and adapt procedures, maximizing efficiency as the Agency grows
    • Coordinating flow of information between accounting and other internal departments
    • Assisting the CFO in preparation of the annual audit, assuming responsibility after the completion of the first audit
    • Reviewing and posting all manual journal entries generated by staff to ensure compliance with GAAP and internal policies
    • Working with the CFO to evaluate current processes / policies and improve or develop new processes that maximize information flow as well as provide greater assurance through internal controls and segregation of duties

    Compliance

    • Ensuring appropriate internal controls are in place to comply with legal and regulatory issues regarding all financial accounting activities
    • Assuming responsibility for the security and confidentiality of all accounting records or records within the scope of the accounting business functions
    • Ensure compliance with DOL, ERISA, Sarbanes-Oxley and GAAP as they pertain to Agency operations

    Reporting

    • Producing both standard and ad hoc financial reports accurately and in a timely manner
    • Ensuring all requested and/or required reports are accurate and accessible upon request
    • Preparing timely and accurate interim reporting of operational results, as well as reports requested by internal customers or required for compliance
    • All other duties assigned by the CFO

    • Sound judgment in consulting on Agency accounting matters

    • Skill in analyzing processes, making appropriate recommendations and implementing changes, if needed
    • Ability to multi-task, performing several duties simultaneously without loss of composure
    • Expert knowledge of accounting regulatory frameworks, including but not limited to GAAP, FASB regulations and COSO

    Management/leadership

    • Effective management of processes through delegation and oversight
    • Conscientiousness regarding timeliness and quality of delegated work
    • Ability to make sound hiring decisions, recognizing potential and develop staff appropriately

    Educational

    • Minimum of seven years of accounting experience, with at least five years management experience
    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required. MBA and/or MACC preferred
    • CPA or eligibility to sit for the CPA within 24 months of hire. Attainment within four years for candidates not holding an active license at time of hire
    • Strong understanding of GAAP and ability to research GAAP issues and standards as it relates to the Agency
    • Solid proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, with a strong comfort level teaching these to others
    • Previous experience with Windows-based accounting software
    • Experience in non-profit environment helpful
    • Valid license, current insurance and good driving record
