Responsibilities

Reporting to the Vice President of Community Engagement, the Director of Community Engagement has responsibility for activities related to the Agency’s community partnerships, signature fundraisers, donor relations, volunteer program and special events. This position collaborates in planning, developing and implementing programs for the good of clients, the community, the staff, volunteers and the Agency.

 

Essential Functions

  • Guide and lead larger multi-disciplinary teams outside of direct span of control.
  • Collaborate with Mission Services, Mission Advancement and Development roles to effectively build community development resources to further agency goals.
  • Design from inception to execution of unique, engaging, cost effective and successful fundraising events and programs. Programs include, but aren’t limited to the following:
    • Power of Work Awards Luncheon (powerofworkkc.org)
    • Goodwill Haunting Fundraiser (goodwillhaunting.org)
    • Round-up at the register fundraiser promotions at Goodwill resale stores
    • Additional “friend”-raisers and donation appreciation events
    • Community donation drives
  • Total revenue goal for 2018 is $285,000. This is driven by round-up register programs, two signature fundraisers, online donations and in-kind support.
  • Act as agency’s subject matter expert for communication best practices. Provide a process to ensure internal communication is clear, consistent and effective.
  • Work closely with graphic designer and other creative team members to apply brand standards and brand voice to internal and external communication.
  • Build and maintain current knowledge of and effective relationships with other human service organizations, media partners, community groups, schools, and other external stakeholders as needed.
  • Professionally represent Goodwill and develop effective relationships with other human service organizations, media partners, community groups, schools, and other external stakeholders to further Goodwill’s goals and mission.
  • Oversee budgetary and capital planning as well as cost management for responsible activities in alignment with Goodwill’s routine operational needs and strategic plan.
  • Participate in achieving the goals of the strategic direction of the Agency and implementation of new processes and approaches to contribute to successfully reaching Agency goals.
  • Develop and manage direct staff. Expand staff as activities support. This includes recruitment, hiring, retention and training of staff to successfully conduct the business of the division.
  • Model and encourage collaborative, optimistic and enthusiastic work behaviors throughout the organization. This includes promoting a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values training, communication and a commitment to excellence.
  • All other duties assigned by the Vice President of Community Engagement

Qualifications

The Director of Community Engagement will be a proven leader with the following:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, Nonprofit Management or other relevant certification of expertise preferred.
  • Five or more years of management experience is required. 
  • Ability to think creatively and direct design staff/vendors in preparing collateral materials.
  • An effective communicator, with strong oral and written skills, including creative writing and editing skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with executing strategic planning for a large organization.
  • Established ability to make things happen – putting programs and change efforts into action; facilitating coordination and collaboration of tasks; providing midcourse corrections when actual outcomes start to diverge from intended outcomes or when new conditions require adaptation; supporting those responsible for carrying out projects and plans.
  • A collaborative and flexible style, with a strong service mentality. Needs to be a team player who breaks down silos and crosses department lines to work as a team.
  • A hands-on manager with integrity and a desire to work in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.
  • Strong commitment to developing team members.
