A passionate advocate for the mission, vision, programs and values of Goodwill of Western Missouri & Eastern Kansas, the President & CEO will possess a depth of management experience and have strong command of retail operations and solid decision making skills. 


S/he will be well informed on current trends in workforce development and services for individuals with disabilities and who face other barriers to employment.  S/he will be a leader who can look to the future to anticipate issues and opportunities that may impact the agency.  The President & CEO will be a strategic thinker who exhibits best practices in organizational leadership.  In carrying out his/her responsibilities, the President & CEO will: 


  • Lead the development and implementation of organizational and business strategies, new business initiatives, fund development initiatives, and related objectives which will result in the continued success of Goodwill. 
  • Ensure the financial and operational health and wellbeing of the organization. Lead the ongoing development of business plans, fund development plans, financial and operational goals.   
  • Promote a positive and progressive culture that mirrors our agency’s values. Ensure all programs and services rendered meet or exceed industry standards, and that the individuals and families served by Goodwill receive the highest quality accommodations and programs. 
  • Contribute to the success of Goodwill as a whole. Identify, develop and pursue business and partnership opportunities that support and/or improve conditions for the communities in our region that benefit from Goodwill.



Strategic Leadership.  The President & CEO will be able to articulate the vision of Goodwill in our community and develop a strategic plan to bring that vision to life.  S/he will do so in a way that involves and engages Goodwill team members, seeking buy in and creating a positive culture and workplace.

Retail Leadership.  The President & CEO has experience in a retail leadership role, with demonstrated success over multiple stores or sites within a chain or business unit.

Mission Leadership.  The President & CEO understands how to identify and meet needs in a philanthropic organization, including fundraising and resource development to support the mission. 


Community Leadership.  The President & CEO is known in his/her community, is engaging and outward facing, and offers demonstrated success in building partnerships.

In addition, the President & CEO will possess:

knowledge of advanced principles and best practices of: 

  • Corporate planning and management
  • Change management
  • Effective advocacy, media relations and public speaking
  • Accounting and budgeting projection, analysis and administration
  • Human resources management and leadership development 

Education and Experience 

10 years of progressively responsible experience in business, retail, nonprofit management or related field, with a minimum of five years’ experience in a high-level management position.


Bachelor’s degree in business, management or related field required.  Master’s or other advanced degree desired.

Reporting to the Board, the President & CEO is responsible for the oversight and effective management of all Goodwill programs, services and operations and ensures sufficient resources to carry out our mission.  The President & CEO assists the board in setting strategic direction, in identifying long-range needs, and in charting a path of growth responsive to the populations we serve.  With oversight responsibility for a $23 million annual budget, a staff of 233 full-time and 358 part-time associates and 14 retail/donation and program sites across a 15-county region, the President & CEO will demonstrate a history of strong business and financial management, retail experience, and knowledge of complex multi-line business organizations.
